FOSTERING ONE

SAVES TWO

Welcome to the Soul Dog Rescue Foster Program!

Fosters are the backbone of what we do at Soul Dog! Fostering is a lifesaving act, and we are extremely grateful! This website should answer most of the frequently asked questions that arise when fostering and we hope that it will serve as a blueprint for your experience in our program.

Rez animals often come from challenging circumstances. Lack of shelter, lack of proper nutrition, lack of clean water and of veterinary care is the norm for most of these animals. Life is different for the people on these tribal lands; thus, life is different for the animals as well. Often there just is not access to veterinary care as the land is sparse and for those who can travel hundreds of miles to seek care, the cost is often a limiting factor.

The result of this is a variety of conditions that we see often and that are synonymous with rez animals such as: parvo, distemper, mange, broken limbs healed incorrectly, malnutrition, broken and worn teeth, ticks and fleas, tick-borne diseases, and many other things. If you are willing to deal with some or all these things by welcoming a rez animal into your home, the experience and reward will be memorable. Most of these ailments are treatable and as part of our commitment to the animals we bring in, we will try our best to help each animal against anything they may be suffering from.

Many rez animals are not used to being in a house, so the first experience may take some time to adjust. They may take a while to understand potty training, and may need to be fed separately from everyone else. Things like stairs, vacuums, slick floors and loud noises may be startling at first.

SOUL DOG FOSTER COORDINATOR:

Right now, a group of volunteers are serving as the Foster Coordinator(s). You can get ahold of any of them via the foster email or the Facebook group.

It is ideal that we communicate mainly via email at foster@souldog.org.

In case of an emergency, our director Shelby can be reached at 720-939-2221. If you do need to get ahold of Shelby in an emergency, in the 1st text, state your full name and the animal(s) that are in your care.

PLEASE NOTE: We talk to a lot of people daily so communication via email and or text is preferred so we are able to reference back to your specific foster needs.

SOUL DOG MEDICAL:

We have full-time vetting staff on board at our shelter facility in Fort Lupton. All medical related things including vaccines and sterilization surgery will be completed at our shelter. If at any point you have medical questions or concerns not related to vaccines, email medical at medical@souldog.org.

FACEBOOK FOSTER/VOLUNTEER GROUP:

We have a foster/volunteer group on Facebook. We post our foster needs in this group. It’s really active and it’s full of wonderful people with a ton of knowledge and resources!

If you have Facebook, request to join. PLEASE NOTE: When you request to join, make sure you answer the questions and state the full name you used to apply as a foster with us at Soul Dog Rescue. If you don’t you may be denied. Only active fosters/volunteers are allowed to be in this group.
